  • Top 5: Gardening with Children

This year, National Children’s Gardening Week takes place from the 23rd – 31st May. These are our top five ideas for getting kids out in the garden and working on some home grown projects!

This week is an ideal time to encourage children to enjoy gardening. Copyright Adam Hester/Getty Images.

CREATE A SENSORY AREA OF THE GARDEN

Adding sensory plants to the garden gives children a chance to play and interact more, helping them to learn and gain new knowledge. It’s easy to find interesting plants to look at, but there are also plants with wonderful smells, sounds, tastes and feels! Children are often fascinated by the weird and wonderful and many plants can help achieve this with little fuss.

    1. Stachys byzantine ‘Big Ears’ – this plant is a real crowd pleaser, with its furry feeling leaves. Children will be fascinated to touch the leaves and discover their strange texture.
    1. Lemon Balm Melissa officinalis – one for the nose, this perennial herb is lemon scented and produces lovely creamy flowers in Summer. It’s also loved by bees, adding wildlife to the garden and sound to a sensory area. Children will love getting up close and smelling the lemon scent.
    1. Helichrysum angustifolium – more commonly known as the Curry Plant, Helichrysum angustifolium has glorious aromatic foliage with beautiful silver leaves. It’s easy to grow and likes a sunny location in the garden. Children will be fascinated by its smell.
    1. Griselinia littoralis
This plant provides excellent evergreen screening, but also has a lovely silky soft feel to its leaves. Children will be attracted to the glossy leaves and will love touch.
    1. Fargesia nitida ‘Black Pearl’
This amazing, clump forming bamboo has attractive dark canes and is also ideal for containers or smaller gardens. When the breeze moves through the foliage, it creates a relaxing rustling sound.

    MAKE A MINI ALLOTMENT

Mini allotments are easy to make and allow vegetables to be grown all year round! Kids will love them as they can see the results of their work quite quickly. Start by ensuring that you have a suitable container, such as old plastic pots or plastic trays. Your container needs to have drainage holes. If it has open sides (such as a crate) then line it to stop the compost falling out – remember to add holes in this too to ensure drainage. Then follow these steps!

    1. Add compost to your container and level it out. This can be done with a ruler or can be patted down with hands!
    2. Choose your micro seeds and plant them as instructed on the packet! They can be planned closer together than recommended as this is a mini allotment.
    3. Make sure that the seeds are labelled, using a maker such as an ice cream stick.
    4. Water the mini allotment outside and then bring it inside and place on a sunny windowsill.
    5. Check it regularly (this could be a daily job for a child) and water when the compost is dry. Crops should be ready to harvest after 15 to 25 days!

Making a mini allotment can help to teach children about how food is grown and can encourage them to eat their 5-a-day. Image from Wilko.

    SOW SUNFLOWER SEEDS IN POTS

Sunflowers are a brilliant choice to grow with children. It teaches them about how to plant and care for seeds, and sunflowers are interesting plants for children to look at with all their details! They are especially enjoyable if they grow very tall. To start with you will need some pots, compost and your sunflower seeds.

    1. Add compost to the pot and then make a hole in the middle of the compost with your finger. The hole should be around 2cm deep.
    2. Place a sunflower seed into the hole and cover with compost.
    3. Make sure that it is labelled and then water it enough to make the compost moist. Move it to a sunny windowsill and ensure that the pot has enough water to keep it moist.
    4. Harden off before moving them outside permanently. Take them outside in the day time and then bring them in again at night. This is a great job for the kids to do and gives them some responsibility!
    5. Once hardened off, you can plant your seedlings outside and watch them grow!

Shop vegetable plants here. Please note these are not all suitable for growing in a mini allotment.

GET CREATIVE MAKING SIGNS AND LABELS

This is a great task for keeping the garden organised and for getting children to be creative! Children can use a range of materials and designs to create plant labels which are appealing and informative. Pictures of the plant could also be printed or drawn out and put on the labels, so children can see what is growing!

Create some creative plant markers, such as these ones from Sustainable Simplicity.

    MAKE A BUG HOTEL

Lots of gardens are very tidy and we often move things where bugs might make their nests or escape from bad weather. Creating a bug hotel gives these creepy crawlies a place to live and brings wildlife back into your garden. The ideal bug hotel will have lots of spaces inside, and can be dry or damp, depending on what you are trying to attract. Many different materials can be used to build them – why not start but seeing what you already have in your garden to use?

Animals that might visit your bug hotel include bees, woodlice, spiders, centipedes, ladybirds and more!

  • Coolings on BBC News

We reopened our doors on Wednesday 13th May and were delighted to be visited by BBC News correspondent, Emma Simpson.

Our garden centre at Coolings, Rushmore Hill in Knockholt featured on the national evening news and was a great profile for us. Our team have been working very hard to get the site ready for reopening, as for the last few weeks, we had been operating as a delivery service, with much of our site being changed around! We are very happy to be open and were pleased to see so many of our loyal customers coming back to visit us. If you haven’t seen the video yet, click below to watch.

  • Covid 19 Customer Guidelines

Whilst we are delighted that we can reopen, we are of course, well aware that we have to keep our staff and customers safe. Therefore we have restrictions that you wouldn’t normally see at Coolings. We ask all customers to be respectful of these and to conduct their trips in a safe and considerate manner.

    • A limited number of customers will be allowed in store at one time, meaning there is likely to be a queue outside. Please check back to this page as we will be posting queuing times throughout the day.
    • We will not be allowing groups of more than two, or any customers under the age of 18, to enter our stores.
    • Please observe 2m distance when shopping. Our staff are here to help and are happy to, but please be mindful of them too and maintain 2m distance.
    • Wipes are available for all our trollies so that handles can be wiped down.
    • We know that it’s tempting to pick plants up to have a look, but please only touch products that you intend to buy.
    • Some areas have directional signage. Please adhere to these restrictions as they are for customer and staff safety.
    • We ask all customers to pay by card. We are accepting contactless payment up to the value of £45 and Apple or Android Pay up to £100. Chip and pin machines have wipes by them.
    • Our tills and customer service areas have been fitted with screens to protect our customers and staff.
    • At this time our wheelchairs and electric scooters are unfortunately not available for use due to Covid-19 restrictions.
    • Our coffee shops will not be open and are unlikely to be for some time.

We know that many of our customers love to visit for a browse and to visit our restaurants. We know you will be delighted that Coolings garden centres are open. Please be mindful of the fact that people may be waiting to enter the store for quite a while. At the moment a visit to us should be treated as a visit to purchase necessary garden items, rather than a social one.

You may also notice that we do not currently have the full range you would be used to at Coolings. However, we still have plenty of plants available and are working hard to get back to the full range we would like.

If you are not comfortable with visiting us at the moment, you can still place an order in our Online Shop for home delivery. Postcode restrictions apply.

For more information, please visit http://localhost.coolings0909.com/faqs

You may have also noticed that we have launched a new website. It has been a long time in the making and we are delighted to have a sleeker, modern look. We hope that it improves your experience of using our website and allows easier navigation of the online shop.

Looking forward, we are hoping that we will be able to reopen soon and are looking into how we can practice social distance effectively. With Spring well underway, we would love to allow our visitors back to see our beautiful site. We will only open when we are sure that we can keep both customers and staff safe and until that time we will continue to offer online deliveries.

  • Happy 50th Earth Day!

These are some of the things that we have instigated at Coolings The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Rushmore Hill, as part of our mission to do our bit.

    Nursery

Over 1 million plants are grown on our 4.5-acre nursery at Rushmore Hill every year. We grow over 80% of our own bedding, including over 6,000 hanging baskets. In addition to this the Hardy Nursery Team produce over 300 varieties of shrubs, 600 varieties of herbaceous perennials, 300 varieties of roses and many trees on site. The benefit of this is that we know the top-quality of our own plants and travel is negated! Where we source plants from outside, we endeavour to use local suppliers.

    Water

We harvest water from our roofs, glasshouses, tunnels and irrigation and pipe it back to our two on-site reservoirs where it is stored until used again. These reservoirs can hold a huge 6.7 million litres of water (the equivalent of 6 full sized Olympic swimming pools). This means that we are less dependent on tap water as we are reusing water on site.

We use drip irrigation and sub-irrigation extensively throughout our site. Our plants take up their water through capillary action, ensuring they only take up what they need. This also results in stronger and healthier plants with less need for chemical sprays.

    Green Waste

We compost more that 2 shipping containers worth of our material (spent compost, prunings, dead plants and coffee shop vegetable waste) every year and use this to mulch our flowerbeds and incorporate it prior to planting. We also sell it to our customers as a low-cost alternative soil improver!

    Recycling

Plastic and cardboard are bailed and recycled. It is collected from us and sent to be recycled and used. Over 20 tonnes of cardboard is recycled every year (the same weight as 10 Black Rhinos!), along with 2 domestic garages worth of glass and paper.

Our coffee shops also use these facilities to reduce their waste and they recycle all glass bottles and tins used.

    Solar Heating

Arthurs coffee shop has solar heating panels on the roof, which help to heat up the hot water for the bathrooms. This reduces the supply of hot water needed in Arthurs. You can see a read out of the roof temperature next to the ladies’ toilet door in Arthurs.

    Education

We aim to encourage environmental awareness amongst our visitors and are vocal about what we do for the environment. We also love wildlife and promote its importance in the garden where we can.

    Coolings Green & Pleasant

Our sister site at Main Road, Knockholt is one of the most environmentally friendly garden centres in the UK. These are some of the ways in which they reduce their environmental impact.

    • A biomass boiler burns wood waste material from green garden waste and provides heating.
    • Walls are insulated with straw bales, insulating the building.
    • Roof insulation is significantly thicker than industry standards, meaning there is less heating demand in the Winter and less need to cool the building in Summer.
    • Rainwater is recycled to be used for flushing of toilets and irrigation on site
    • Reclaimed timber has been used for the flooring which not only means it is used twice, it has less impact on the environment than concrete.
