  • Coolings Lifestyle – Home Décor

Adding blue tones around the home; provides tranquillity and peace due to its cooling and calming nature and connection to the deep blue sea. Using blue in home offices is perfect for adding serenity whilst creating space for productivity. A great way to incorporate blue may be through accent pieces such as chairs, cushions or lamps.

Vibrant yellow colours fuel the home with happiness and positivity, energising every corner of the room in which it is present. Placed next to a crisp, white tone brings out the cheerful hue of the colour. Whether it be an accent piece or a smaller item such as dishware, it is great anywhere in the home.

The presence of green instantly brings a connection with nature to any home. With a connection to health and wellbeing, this colour is best in bedrooms, to add serenity to the place we love the most! The versatility of the colour allows its addition in artificial and plant form, bringing the great outdoors- in!

Pretty in pink! The timeless classic pale red tone is a controversial addition in large quantities, however, its beauty in aesthetics and soothing nature make it perfect for around the home. Using natural earthy tones alongside neutral pinks also creates elegance.

Often misunderstood- red sometimes gives us a negative feeling of danger, however, used correctly in the home can cultivate the most positive feelings. Stimulating appetite, red is an ideal colour to use in dining rooms/areas. Similarly, using a pop of orange around the home stimulates the appetite, adding warmth and evoking joy. Burnt oranges work well alongside gold tones, with brighter oranges being a perfect contrast to cool, soft whites.

Black and white are block tones that can be overused- but we can’t get enough of them for home décor! They create a timeless glimpse of elegance. When used together the black becomes a shadow, allowing the addition of more items to an area. Both colours bring out the best in brighter tones and are mainly used in show-stopping rooms such as dining rooms and living areas.

At Coolings Lifestyle, we have an abundance of home wear items from furniture to furnishings which cover all bases of what your home needs to evoke the most positive feelings.

With brands from PTMD to Freckleface, we cover all bases of home décor from chairs, cushions, candles, diffusers, outdoor furnishings and much more.

    Bedding

The bedding team produce 80% of all bedding plants, in which we sell and also send on to our other centres, meaning the production outcome is huge. To give you some insight on the scale, around 70-80 thousand Geraniums are produced each year- how impressive!

This doesn’t happen without a strict and in-depth schedule which closely watches each plant throughout the production process. First up – potting!

    There are two large potting machines and a robotic transplanter located within the glasshouses;

The transplanter is for pack plants– The trays are potted, grown and sold in as little as 3 weeks. The machine uses 6 heads to pick up the plug plants and these are then transplanted into packs filled with Coolings professional compost. It grabs the seed, plants it within the pre-potted compost, and then is labelled. The machine pots around 7,500 plants an hour, meaning that 40,000 plug plants have been potted up just this week.

2 potting machines for individual planting– compost is added to each pot, then a drill makes a hole in the compost ready for staff to hand pot the plant, labels are then added to the pots. This method requires speed and precision from the staff who never fail to impress us! Watch it in action.

    Growing

The plants stay in the glasshouses with heating until they are large enough to be moved out to the colder structures. They are grown on benches where they are off of the ground and warmer. They also may be stored in gutters which are automatically filled with water and drained back to our reservoir. They fit around 4,500 plants so are a great space saver.

    Watering

Automatic irrigation comes on in the morning before the staff arrive. There are overhead drippers for baskets. Each nozzle releases 2 litres an hour, but they are only on for 10 minutes, 2-3 times a day.

We also water by hand looking for pests and diseases and to see how the plant is growing, we use biological control to combat pests, we release 200 wasps every 2 weeks that lay eggs into the aphids killing the aphids and they hatch as wasps. You can’t see them as they are so tiny, but they get the job done. This natural pest control ensures that no chemicals are used.

    Heating

Heating and humidity are environmentally controlled with our computer to ensure the best possible growing conditions and they get the temperatures they need.

After this for the final stage, they are moved outside to the cooler tunnels and spaced out to allow air around each pot, this gives us more room for production in the warmer glasshouses and ensures plants are hardened off and ready for your garden.

    Hardy Production

The Hardy Nursery Team work all year round to produce a large range of Coolings plants including over 300 varieties of shrubs, 600 herbaceous perennials, 300 varieties of roses plus a vast range of trees.

There are approximately 1000 trees across the Rushmore Hill Nursery. They arrive in July as root balls with no leaves from Holland and New Zealand, we pot them up in the glasshouse, and then the following year they go outside.

Outside, there are frames made out of timber full of sand with drainpipes which run around the edge. It is watered once so there’s a film between the plant and the bed. Plants then take what they need from underneath, this saves overwatering and reduces the risk of disease as wetting foliage increases this. It also results in using little/no chemicals in the growing process.
Unlike bedding, hardy plants use rainwater from the reservoir as they aren’t affected by the possible disease that rainwater can give to young plants with a young root system.

Keeping the Environment at the heart of what we do

    Compost

We have been trialling peat-free for years to find the best and ensure we use it within our nursery and it is now available in our shop. From the potted plants you can see that peat free is much lighter in colour and texture- it’s made from wood and coir. This takes more water and feed so Osmocote is added to all of our peat-free crops.

    Water harvested using reservoirs

We collect rainwater from the roofs of our buildings and runoff from the ground to feed into our reservoirs at The Gardener’s Garden Centre, this is then used for filtering and for use on our plants.

Targeted irrigation systems are used throughout our nurseries through sand beds and drippers, to reduce our water usage. This also includes automatic control for watering at optimum times, such as dawn and dusk.

    Veg beds used for Arthurs

The kitchen garden, located inside the tunnel outside the back of Arthurs, includes seasonal vegetables, salad, fruit and herbs all used in Arthur’s fresh seasonal dishes.

    Sourcing from the UK

Most plants come from the UK, ranging from Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Cornwall and Scotland. It’s all about sourcing from locations that give the best quality plants!

  • Spend £60 and Receive a Free Bag of Compost!

Compost is a key ingredient in any garden. It is a natural fertiliser that provides essential nutrients to your plants, helping them to grow stronger and healthier. Additionally, compost can help improve soil quality by increasing its water retention and improving its texture. This means that your plants will be able to absorb the nutrients they need, resulting in better growth and more bountiful harvests.

For gardeners looking to stock up on supplies this offer couldn’t come at a better time. Compost is made from organic materials such as food waste and yard clippings, which would otherwise end up in landfill. By using compost in your garden, not only are you reducing waste, but contributing to a more sustainable future.

The premium compost caters for the needs of all young and mature potted plants. Its unique formulation with organic coir feeds your plants 3 months, whilst providing the optimum structure for the roots to grow strong.

  • Lawncare for a Luscious Lawn

    Top Tips for your lawn

    1. Mow Often

Your grass should be growing strongly now so the need for regular mowing (around once a week) is great for encouraging growth. By mowing regularly you are encouraging strong growth and deterring weeds from growing. Clippings can be added to compost heaps but be careful not to add too much as it may slow down the rate of composting.

    2.  Cut Edges

To prevent grass from creeping into the flower borders or weeds growing and harming the lawn quality we suggest lawncare products such as edging with a half-moon edging iron. We recommend the Kent & Stowe Carbon Steel Edging Iron  (£22.99)available in our Garden Centres.

    3. Feed Your Grass and Scarify

    It is vital to do this in order to maintain a fresh and healthy lawn. We recommend these lawncare products;

    • Miracle-Gro Complete 4in1 8m2 (£14.99) which feeds your lawn whilst also working to kill weeds and control moss, and provides a richer, greener lawn in 7 days. The formula helps to protect against heat, draught and other stresses. In 1 week the moss will blacken and can be easily raked out, and weeds will be killed within 3-5 weeks.

    Lawncare products

    • Miracle-Gro Evergreen No Rake Moss Remover Lawn food (£18.99), which is not only a feed but a moss killer. It contains a bacteria which consumes the moss and doesn’t turn it black, so you will not need to rake it out. It also contains a slow release lawn fertiliser that feeds your lawn for up to 3 months and helps prevent moss from redeveloping.

    4. Watering

All lawns benefit from watering if the weather isn’t providing it. Watering every 7- 10 days helps encourage growth, especially for new lawns. Just make sure not to overwater and re-use water from the bath or from your waterbutt.

    5. Repairing Bare Patches

In order to do this place the seed, add a top dressing and allow the seed to establish, we suggest Westland Lawn and Turf Dressing (£6.99).

    Garden centre lawncare products

    6. Sowing New Grass

If you are sowing new grass now, try not to walk on, or mow it until it has reached 2-3 inches. You must ensure care is taken in feeding (see above) alongside reseeding bare patches and dealing with moss and weed invasion.

Spring is the best season to lay new turf and keep well-watered if a dry spell hits. We sell turf by the roll with each roll sized 1m². You may wish to call beforehand to check our stock levels.

    7. Be Wary of Frost

Check the forecast and don’t be tempted to mow too early as the temperature has a huge effect on your grass. The grass becomes rigid once frozen and when walked on, the individual blade of grass ruptures, which damages the leaf cells and may have an impact on growth.

In order to prevent damage, keep the lawnmower blade high and the cut light and then gradually lower the blade as the weather becomes warmer.

Miracle- Gro Grass Seed Refill Station

In order to reduce waste and encourage growth we have installed a Miracle- Gro Grass Seed Refill Station in our Coolings The Gardener’s Garden Centre at Rushmore Hill. We are lucky enough to be one of two garden centres in the country to trial this. It is a great method of reducing waste for the environment and allows you to buy what you need!

There are 10 different hoppers with 6 varieties of seed to choose from all have to do is chose the seed you need, fill up a refillable bag, weigh and pay. Why not give it a try?

  • Jon Creates a New Border

I’m currently renovating my cottage garden, and this spring I decided to create a new mixed border along a Victorian barn wall. I have started by planting a selection of beautiful David Austin climbing roses at the back of the border against the wall. No cottage garden is complete without climbing roses and their blooms will look stunning against the wall come the summer months.

I am also planting an Osmanthus Burkwoodii in this border, a large evergreen shrub with clusters of small, highly scented jasmine-like white flowers in April and May and blue-black fruits in late summer to autumn. I often recommend this shrub to customers to plant in borders because it’s low-maintenance and provides year-round interest.

Next I need to decide what else to plant in my new border, watch this space!

We will be sharing more updates from Jon and the team on our Facebook pages over the coming week, keep an eye out!

  • Will & Emma Create a No-Dig Veg Bed

Our garden is very much a blank canvas but having been here a year, we’re keen to create a garden for everyone to enjoy.

Our first project is a no-dig veg bed. The no-dig method is kinder on the soil structure as it isn’t being constantly disrupted. Worms and other organisms are left to their own devices meaning that the ecosystem of the soil is intact.

We have created the veg bed (measuring 2m x 6m) using sleepers which we have relocated from another part of the garden. Because they were here before us, we don’t know whether they have been treated with any chemicals so we are lining them with some plastic (old compost bags) to prevent any chemicals from entering the soil.

The no-dig method consists of layering cardboard onto the grass that is here and then covering it with a layer of compost and manure. It is important to overlap the cardboard so that there are no gaps. Also make sure you water it – this helps it to break down, and prevents it blowing away.

On top of the cardboard we have added a layer of well-mixed multi-purpose compost (peat-free of course), rotted manure and top soil approximately 15cm thick. Once this is spread, walk over it to bed it in and firm it down (don’t over-do it, you’re not trying to compact it), this will give you a good base to plant into.

    Next up… planting.

  • Lizzie Plants a Pollinator Path

Having lived here for a year, we realised that we would benefit from a path to take us from the house to the shed and decided on a pollinator path. We wanted to keep it environmentally friendly so we have decided to create a walkway made of decking boards interspersed with very low growing ground cover plants which flower and provide nectar and pollen for pollinators.

I have chosen a mix of herbs and alpines which will tolerate light foot traffic including Thyme Creeping Red, Chamomile, Aubretia, Saxifrage, Sagina and Mazus. They all have interesting foliage and flower at different times ensuring there is year-round interest.

We started by cutting the decking boards to size and then placing them out across the lawn – I wanted to create a less-formal look so they’ve been cut to different sizes and I haven’t lined them all up perfectly. I then started planting the herbs and alpines in-between them, I’ve not planted them too close together as I want to give them room to spread out.

Like with most gardening projects it is a work in progress but we’re looking forward to getting it finished and enjoying watching the wildlife our pollinator path attracts!

We will be sharing more updates from Lizzie and the team on our Facebook pages over the coming week, keep an eye out!

  • How to Create a Stylish Garden Room

If you are thinking of adding a garden room to your outdoor space, or maybe you just want to makeover an existing one, here are a few tips on how you can create a stylish, practical room to enjoy spending time in this summer.

    Stylish interiors and soft furnishings

A garden room will provide comfort during all seasons. Traditionally, summerhouses were named because they were only comfortable in the summer months, they seldom featured insulation, double glazing and electrics and offered little protection from the elements. Nowadays, Garden rooms and summerhouses can offer everything that is needed for comfortable year-round use. The fabric of the buildings is designed to retain heat via full insulation and double-glazing. It is this guarantee which means you can splash out on soft furnishings and interiors without worrying they will become ruined by their damp, moist surroundings.

Our PTMD Collection based at Coolings Lifestyle will help you add a personal touch to your interiors, from lighting, pots, glassware, furniture, to textiles, candles, diffusers, (wall) decoration and clocks.  The premium PTMD home interiors brand offer a sophisticated and elegant collection of home accessories which we have selectively handpicked from the 7000+ product range available. PTMD stylists travel the world to ethically source some of the most unique products, collaborating with professional artists and skilled producers. We are delighted to be able to offer such a chic range of interiors and soft furnishings.

    Use light to your advantage

Complementary lighting is a vital part of any home or garden design. A beautiful garden building should be rewarded with complementary lighting both inside and out. It will enable you to enhance the features you want to show off, create your desired ambience and assist with the practicalities and functions that the room is intended for. We have an impressive range of lighting solutions across all our sites but, when considering lighting for the outside of your outbuilding, some well-placed, solar powered lighting will help light and guide the way from your home to your garden house.

String lights and table lights will help create a great ambience and scene when enjoying an evening sitting on the deck or patio area of your garden house. Our outdoor wall art collection is always  popular among customers looking to brighten interior walls, particularly in outbuildings.

    Consider the building’s exterior

A garden mirror can be a great addition to your outdoor space as it helps to bounce light into dark corners and spaces, and gives the illusion of depth and space beyond the wall on which it hangs.  Hanging one on the exterior of your garden house will enable you to bring the inside out, extending your living space into the garden to create your very own outdoor living room! Outdoor art and clocks are also a wonderful way to achieve the same effect.

    Pots and blooms

Plants and pots are another fantastic way to add a little bit of personality to a space. Whether you are after a country cottage feel, beach-inspired retreat or a sleek, modern zen-den to escape to after an exhausting day gardening, our garden centres are full of inspiration. Glazed, wooden, terracotta fireclay/resin, hanging or balcony – we have containers to suit all styles and tastes.

Have you considered adding interior window shutters?

Adding shutters to your garden room windows will not only create a wonderful talking point with visitors, but it will improve the energy efficiency of the building too. Not only are wooden shutters a natural insulator, thanks to the make up of wood’s cellular structure, but they will serve as an additional barrier to preventing heat loss in the winter. During summer, they will help to passively cool the building by preventing sunlight and stifling air from entering. Adding shutters to windows and doors are one of the most energy efficient improvements you can make to your garden room or home without using energy in the process!

On top of that, window shutters will help you control the amount of natural light, and the angle of the light that enters a room. Plus, they offer privacy from neighbours and beautiful aesthetics. Bespoke wooden shutters can be designed to complement your interior design style as well as the style of your home to complement it perfectly.
