    Autumn may be upon us, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of colour in your garden. Thanks to today’s warmer climate, summer now often goes into early October. Where once we pulled out the big guns in June and July, you can now benefit from a set of late-flowering plants to see you through September and October. Try some of the following plant choices to keep your pots and borders looking their best this autumn.

    EVERGREEN CLIMBERS FOR SUNNY SPOTS

    Trachelospermum jasminoides

    An evergreen climber with glossy green leaves which bronze in winter. This climber produces fragrant white flowers in July and August, which will turn to cream. It likes a sunny, sheltered site and will grow well in most soils. Growing up to 3m in 10 years.

    Clematis armandii group

    Clematis armandii are an evergreen group of clematis with exotic looking foliage, which like sunshine and produce flowers in spring. We would recommend ‘Snowdrift’, a vigorous evergreen climber with mid-green, lance shaped leaves and masses of fragrant, pure white star-shaped flowers in spring. This particular variety is toxic to dogs.

    Lonicera henryi Copper Beauty

    Usually known by its common name of Honeysuckle. This evergreen climber has dark green leaves which are copper when young. It produces yellowy-orange flowers in June and July, followed by black berries. Grows in most soils and likes a sunny spot in the garden.

    ROSES FOR A NORTH FACING WALL

    Rosa ‘Albéric Barbier’ (AGM)

    A magnificent variety, with good fragrance, ‘Alberic Barbier’ flowers with fully double, quartered, creamy white flowers, held in small clusters. It is shade tolerant and flowers in early Summer, potentially repeat flowering later in the season. The strong stems and can be trained up an arch. Height and span of 5m x 3m.

    Hydrangea anomala sub. Petiolaris (AGM)

    This spectacular climbing hydrangea is a large self-clinging climber, ideal for north facing walls. It produces pretty white lace cap flowers in the summer. It has deciduous foliage, with the broadly oval leaves turn yellow in Autumn. Height of up to 5m.

    Jasminum nudiflorum (AGM)

    Commonly known as Winter Jasmine, this deciduous climber produces beautiful winter colour, with yellow flowers produced between November and February. With a height and span of 4m x 4m, Jasminium nudiflorum is good in shade and ideal for covering a fence or wall.

    CLIMBERS FOR GROWING THROUGH TREES

    Clematis montana group

    The Montana group are the most vigorous deciduous climbers, with masses of small flowers, which produce spectacular displays. They are strong growers which will happily scramble along many garden structures, including trees. We recommend Clematis montana ‘Fragrant Spring’, which has masses of single, clear pink, fragrant flowers in late spring.

    Rosa Rambling Rector (AGM)

    A vigorous rambler rose with arching stems and a powerful musky clove fragrance. Pretty clusters of semi-double creamy white flowers are produced in mid-summer, followed by red hips in the autumn. Ideal for growing through trees.

    Clematis tangutica group

    Celmatis Tanguitca are a group of primarily yellow clematis which have nodding flowers. This one is a vigorous perennial climber with bright green leaves. Cheerful yellow, lantern shaped flowers are produced in late summer, followed by large, fluffy white seed-heads through autumn and winter. It prefers moist but well drained, non-acidic soil in sun.

  • An Update from Coolings

    We have been happy to donate some of our beautiful plants to some local schools, hospitals and care homes. These have included Warren Road School, Hayes Primary School, Darent Valley Hospital and Bishop Justus School. Our key workers are doing such as fantastic job at the moment and we hope the plants help to brighten up their workspaces.

    Looking forward, we are hoping that we will be able to reopen soon and are looking into how we can practice social distance effectively. With Spring well underway, we would love to allow our visitors back to see our beautiful site. We will only open when we are sure that we can keep both customers and staff safe and until that time we will continue to offer online deliveries.

    Choose scented plants to add smell to your garden. These are best placed in sheltered areas as this contains the fragrances better and will allow them to be enjoyed more.

    Lavender ‘Ashdown Forest’
    A superb variety with lovely scented flowers and foliage. Perfect for celebrating our new site at Wych Cross.

     

    Plants with interesting textures are ideal garden choices for those living with sight impairment. They also go down particularly well with little ones who like to investigate their surroundings.

    Senecio ‘Angels Wings’
    This stunning recent introduction has tactile silky silver foliage. Works well in containers and is impressive on a patio.

    Griselinia littoralis
    Silky soft glossy foliage makes this popular choice the perfect evergreen screening plant.

     

    Edible plants are useful to grow for kitchen use or enjoyment, as well as many of them bringing extra colour to the garden.

    Both ornamental and edible, the flowers have a peppery taste.

    Sound can produce an extra dimension to a sensory garden. Bamboo and grasses are ideal for creating some plant-based audio, along with adding water features or bird baths.

    This vigorous evergreen climber is covered with clusters of perfumed star-shaped white flowers in March. Avoid exposed areas for best growth.

    Clematis montana ‘Fragrant Spring’

    With attractive light pink flowers and a lovely vanilla scent, this is an ideal climber to cloak a fence or scramble through a tree.

    Clematis ‘Early Sensation’

    Ideal for a sheltered location, this lovely climber has attractive evergreen foliage and beautiful white flowers. When grown alongside Clematis Avalanche for pollination it also produces the added bonus amazing ornamental seed heads!

    Clematis alpina ‘Willy’

    This late spring flowering Clematis is a cheeky climber with nodding pink bell shaped flowers. Ideal for growing up trellis or an archway.

    Clematis macropetala ‘Blue Lagoon’

    Semi-double blue flowers with silvery seed heads make this tough and slender climber an attractive choice. Idea for tumbling over a garden fence or wall.

    Rosa ‘Madame Alfred Carrière’
    An incredible grower boasting a strong fruity fragrance. This (almost thornless) climber will go on flowering its lovely clusters of creamy white, sometimes flushed soft-pink, double blooms for
    months at a stretch. Suits any aspect and all soil types.

    Rosa ‘Scent from Heaven’
    Its name says it all. Voted rose of the year in 2017 mainly for its strong, rich fruity fragrance and peach-orange buds that open to lush, semi-double, apricot-orange flowers. Bred in Britain and hailed as being very diseaseresistant. To recap…this climber looks good, smells delicious and requires minimal fuss and bother.

    Rosa ‘Compassion’
    The light pink flowers tinted with coral pink coupled with its strong, sweet fragrance will not fail to warm hearts. This repeat flowering climber loves full sun to part shade and is ideal in north, south east and west aspects.

    Rosa ‘Laura Ford’
    A charming miniature climbing rose with semidouble flowers opening bright yellow at first, becoming lemon-yellow edged with pink from early in the summer through to late autumn. It also has a sweet fragrance and reaches a height of 1.8 metres, so excellent for patios and obelisks.

    Rosa ‘Albertine’
    This vigorous rambling rose will give you a dramatic display of reddish-salmon buds opening to loosely double light pink blooms. Wonderful strong, rich fruity fragrance, with strong dark green leaves. Its growth is branching and bushy and definitely has the ‘WOW’ factor.

    Apply a dressing of a general or rose fertiliser such as Toprose to promote healthy foliage and generous flowering.
