  • Berry Beautiful

An attractive feature of some plants are the ornamental berries that are produced in autumn.  These are both a welcome splash of autumnal interest and, as the winter progresses, often provide an important food source for birds.

Here we give you our pick of the best plants to grow for beautiful berries!

    Pyracantha ‘Golden Charmer’
Perfect shrubs to grow against a wall or fence, producing a curtain of colourful berries as the season progresses.

    Pernettya mucronata
Stunning colourful berries are a real eye-catcher.  Requires acidic soil and a male plant for cross-polination.

    Cotoneaster dammeri
Amazing evergreen ground cover shrub perfect for trailing over walls to hide brickwork.  Studded with small red berries in autumn.

    Hypericum ‘Magical Series’
These attractive dwarf shrubs have yellow flowers in summer followed by masses of attractive berries in shades of red, yellow or white.

    Skimmia ‘Pabella’
A fantastic self-fertile introduction that makes a lovely compact shrub and is ideally grown in a pot in ericaceous compost.  Packed with glossy red berries through autumn and winter.

    Callicarpa ‘Profusion’
This beauty has iridescent pearly purple berries in autumn.  Plant in pairs for best displays.

    Viburnum opulus ‘Compactum’
This classy Viburnum has lovely white flowers in spring followed by beautiful clusters of red berries.

    Cotoneaster lacteus
Top choice shrub for attracting birds to your garden, this strong growing variety is both ornamental and beneficial to wildlife.

  • Mossy March – Declare War on Moss

It has been a very wet year, and a lot of us have had problems with moss on the lawn.  Rather than just killing the moss, we need to start with eliminating the cause of the problem.

A good way to do this is to aerate the area with a tine hollow aerator, then fill in the holes by brushing in top dressing, followed by applying a good moss killer.  Our best seller is MO-Bacter which starts at £22.99, but there are several others on the market, for example EverGreen complete 4 in 1. When it has worked its magic, you might be left with bare patches or a very sparse lawn.  The remedy for that is to over seed or patch seed.  We stock a whole range of grass seed from Johnsons – there should be one that best suits your needs, for example shady place lawn seed.

For patch seeding, Patch Magic is an easy solution – just open the tub and sprinkle onto the patches, then water in.  Prices start at £11.99 and will cover up to 13 patches.  If your lawn happens to look very good and just needs a feed, this is the time to apply.  If your lawn is large, we suggest using a spreader when applying to give an even distribution. We stock two different types: Scotts rotary spreader suitable for very large gardens, and also Scotts drop spreader suitable for all gardens.  Both are adjustable for most products.  We also stock a simpler drop spreader that is compatible with the EverGreen lawn foods.  The Scotts spreaders are also handy when applying MO Bacter.

  • Fun when the Sun goes down!

Now that the BBQ has come out and al fresco dining commenced, it’s cosy to have some lights in and around the garden.
Solar lights are ideal for this, as there are no electrics to connect and no leads to restrict where you place them.  You are free to line paths and borders, hang lights in trees, on fences and walls, and place lanterns around the patio and smaller lights on the table.
We now have a much expanded and vast selection to suit every garden and most tastes.
For the path, the Martello Stake Light at £9.99 or 3 for £20.
For extra prettiness, the new solar powered glass flowers will make a statement in any garden.  Available in several designs at £14.99.

To welcome your guests or line a tricky drive, it’s worth looking at the new Superbright collection. To line a drive I would recommend the Pharos Motion activated Bollard light at £19.99, or 2 for £30.

For that awkward place at the bottom of the garden where the shed is – a wall mounted motion activated security light at £19.99.

We also stock a wide range of battery operated decorative lights, and glass lanterns for candles.
  • Potted Pleasure

One of the easiest ways to quickly transform an outside space is to inject some colour and structure with planted containers.  Instant impact patio plants will give an immediate wow.

    5 Top tips…
    1.  Big is Beautiful
If you want the look and you want it now then larger sized plants in 1 Litre plus sized pots will do the job.  In our nursery we grow a huge range of these bigger sized patio plants including…
    Nemesia
    Geranium
    Verbena
    Argyranthemum
    Begonia
    Fuchsia
    Cosmos

    2. Think Odd!
Upright plants of the same type and variety when grouped in odd numbers (i.e. 3 or 5) in a container will grow together to give the effect of one huge plant!  This is particularly effective with plants such as Marguerites, Euryops, Osteospermum, Upright Fuchsias, Cosmos and Guara.

    3. Use Good Compost
The quality of the growing medium that you use in your container is vital for the health and development of your plants.  You tend to get what you pay for with Compost.  We recommend Coolings Professional Multi-Purpose Compost, which we use in our nursery to grow over a million plants every year.
    4.  Formula for Success
Use the ‘Thriller, Filler, Spiller’ formula as a proven recipe for success when planting containers…
Thriller – Central upright plant to provide height and wow.
Filler – Lower flowering or foliage plants that form the middle layer of a planter.
Spiller – Trailing plants to cascade down the hedge of the container and soften the effect.
    5. Feed
This makes a tremendous difference!  If you want strong healthy flowering plants then DO feed them.  We recommend Miracle-Gro.

  • Winners from RHS Chelsea

One of the most eagerly anticipated horticultural events on the gardening calendar is finally here once again. The prestigious Chelsea Flower Show has been captivating audiences since 1913, and this year is expected to be no different as The Royal Hospital Chelsea opens its doors on May 23rd to showcase the best in garden design.

If you are lucky enough to be attending, you’ll be able to walk through the gates of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and be transported from Spain and Malta to China, Japan, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda. Many of this year’s gardens evoke exotic climes, while others look to the Yorkshire coast, the Norfolk marshes and Berkshire’s heathland.

The word on the street is that many designers are going for bright and cheery summer colours, including deep purple and burnt orange, we can probably expect to see diverse planting styles too.

We take a look back at previous ‘plant of the year’ winners at Chelsea and why they were so liked.  All the plants mentioned below will be in stock at Coolings by 27th May 2017…

Geum ‘Scarlet Tempest’ – won 2nd place for ‘Plant of the Year’ at Chelsea in 2016.
This beautiful, brilliant-scarlet Geum boasts early, large, slightly double flowers from early March right through to autumn. Geums as a genus have become more popular over the past few years particularly with the successes of ‘Totally Tangerine’ that was launched at Chelsea Flower show over 6 years ago.

‘Scarlet Tempest’ is a reasonably new and prolific hardy Geum developed by the breeder of the Anemone Swan series, Elizabeth MacGregor.

Viburnum plicatum tomentosum ‘Kilimanjaro Sunrise’ – won 1st place for ‘Plant of the Year’ 2015 due to its ability to perform a new trick during every season of the year. It’s like having four different plants for the price of one! In April, this unique deciduous shrub delivers beautiful, white lacecap flowers on tiered layers, blushing pink as they mature through the summer. Then, in autumn the foliage turns a fiery red before red berries appear in winter to provide a feast for the birds.

More upright in habit than the species, ‘Kilimanjaro Sunrise’ is perfect for the shrub border where space is at a premium.

Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’ – won 3rd place for ‘Plant of the Year’ in 2015. ‘Love and Wishes’, bred by John Fisher of New South Wales, Australia, is the third colour in the Wish Collection of Salvia varieties and has a lot going for it: a long flowering period, sumptuous deep purple flowers with burgundy (almost black) stems, and paler purple calyces that remain on the stems long after the flowers have fallen.

Its deep purple flowers makes it a perfect compliment to the other Wish varieties and makes a fantastic specimen for a container centrepiece.

Hydrangea marcophylla ‘Miss Saori’ – won 1st place for ‘Plant of the Year’ in 2014.
This stunning mophead hydrangea was bred in Kyoto by young plantsman Ryoji Irie and named for his fiancé who has since become his wife. Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Miss Saori’ is quite unique. Each fully double, white bloom is frosted with a soft rose edge, giving the large rounded flower heads a delicate, frothy appearance. This was the first of a new breed of Hydrangeas that remain the same colour regardless of your soil type, so you are guaranteed to see these beautiful blooms at their best.

The foliage complements the blooms perfectly, taking on an attractive burgundy hue in spring and autumn that only adds to the appeal of this exquisite specimen shrub.

Perfect for borders and patio containers where it will give a long season of interest. To add to its long list of accolades, Hydrangea ‘Miss Saori’ makes a lovely cut flower too!

Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’ – Plant of the Year Winner 2013.
‘Soft Caress’ breeder Ozzie Johnson did a stirling job with this slender shrub. Most Mahonias are notoriously prickly – but not this one! Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’ is the first of its kind to have entirely spine free foliage, making it much more agreeable in the garden. This superb evergreen shrub has a useful autumn flowering period. The plant bursts into fragrant, bright golden flowers between August and September, with large clusters of blue berries appearing later in the year.

This compact and resilient shrub makes a useful addition to borders and containers for plenty of year-round interest.

Foxglove Digitalis ‘Illumination Pink’ – Plant of the Year Winner 2012.
If you love foxgloves but hate how they die after flowering, try this. Thought to be an impossible hybridisation, this is the most spectacular foxglove you will have ever seen! Parentage from the little-known Isoplexis (Canary Island Foxglove) gives this exciting Digitalis its fabulous tropical colouring. Being completely sterile Foxglove ‘Illumination’ won’t set seed, giving it an incredibly long flowering period. Unlike most foxgloves which are generally biennial, this half-hardy semi-evergreen is a true perennial so you will be able to enjoy its year after year. A striking addition to summer borders and earns its keep in the garden much better than the lovely, but fleeting, native foxglove. Fabulous in drifts.

Anemone ‘Wild Swan’ – Plant of the Year Winner 2011.
This dazzling hardy perennial was discovered, and has been trialled for the last 10 years by Elizabeth MacGregor on her nursery in Scotland. It is believed to be a cross between early and late flowering forms, and the result is a plant which flowers intermittently over a long flowering period. Each pure white petal has a distinct grey-blue streak along the reverse, so when in bud, or when the flowers nod and half close the flowers look bluish, but when they are fully open they are a dazzling pure white. Ideal for the woodland garden or partially shaded bed.

All of the above plants are available in store and online from Saturday 27th May!  If you would like to keep up to date with what is happening at Chelsea this week please follow our facebook page @coolingsnurseries

  • Our Top Trends from RHS Chelsea…

Well, what a week it has been at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.  The sun has shone, our favourite Royals visited and we’ve even seen the unlikely pairing of Mary Berry and Chris Evans enjoying the show!  Not forgetting of course, the wonderful gardens and plants that have been showcased at their best to ‘wow’ and inspire as all.  Jon Reburn, our horticultural manager, tells us about the some of the most prominent looks and favourite plants from his visit to this year’s show.

    Lupins, Lupins, Lupins!
West Country Lupins are always a show stopper at Chelsea Flower Show, but this year it really did feel like they were everywhere!  They made a real statement in the Morgan Stanley garden in particular.  Bred for uniformity and colour range, West Country Lupins make a great garden plant, as no staking is required. Produced by tissue culture, vigour is evident in production and plants show improved disease resistance.  The West Country Lupins are a winning collection, showing strength of growth, colour and wow factor.  This summer we have several varieties to choose from at Coolings ranging from the deep bold colour of ‘The Governor’ to the delicate pink and white of ‘The Chatelaine’.

    White Digitalis (Foxgloves)
You can’t go wrong with white foxgloves and they were certainly in abundance this year at Chelsea.  Foxgloves make some of the very best cottage garden, early summer plants and cut flowers.  Our favourite is Digitalis purpurea ‘Snow Thimble’ – tall, stunning spikes of pure, white, bell shape flowers throughout summer.

    Pines and Dwarf Pines
Many designers used Pines and Dwarf Pines within their gardens such as the best artisan garden winner to complement other herbaceous beauties like the coppery coloured Iris ‘Kent Pride’.  Pinus ‘Mugo’ made several appearances as did simple, colourful, green foliage plants like Alchemilla mollis (Lady’s Mantle).

    Acers
Acers were used to stunning effect in several of the smaller show gardens.  The Japanese Garden in particular, showed them at their best.  We have a fantastic range here at Coolings, one of the best in the Country.

    Salvia ‘Caradonna’
Deep purple and orange were very prominent this year and we saw plenty of beautiful Salvia ‘Caradonna’.   It looks wonderful planted with the bright orange of Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ and equally it looked stunning planted under Sambucas ‘Black Lace’.  It was particularly stunning in the gold medal winning ‘Breaking Ground’ show garden and my favourite – The Morgan Stanley Garden designed by Chris Beardshaw where ‘Caradonna’ appeared alongside beautiful Lupins, plenty of green foliage and pine trees.  A stunning combination.

    My favourite…
Primula Vialii featured in the Chinese garden.  Its a striking perennial, with unusual spikes of vivid lilac flowers, tipped with red.  It will add a lovely splash of colour at the front of a shady border.
  • Coolings entry scoops Silver at RHS Chelsea 2017!

Following on from last year’s success with “The Sunflower Square”, the Horticultural Trade Association (HTA) unveiled their industry showcase garden “40 Sunbury Road” at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. Once again, this exhibit ran in conjunction with Peter Seabrook and The Sun newspaper and we are pleased to report that it won Silver!

“40 Sunbury Road” is a celebration of Peter’s 40 years working at the newspaper and the theme is a typical but modest suburban back garden. It is the first back garden to be displayed in the Grand Pavilion at the show. The objective of the project was to create a typical modest suburban back garden that consumers can relate to, whilst at the same time inspire and provide some new and interesting ideas that could easily be copied.

The garden contains a patio area, hanging baskets and containers, a wildlife area, a shed, greenhouse and living walls. The containers and hanging baskets include bedding and container plants grown by HTA members – garden centres (including us!), growers and seed trade. There is also an area grown by schools which includes vegetables and wildlife friendly plants.

This year, Coolings have entered another hanging basket into the “40 Sunbury Road” exhibit and we are delighted to be apart of the fabulous garden and to scoop Silver.

Our entry, boasts beautiful upright Fuchsia ‘Sarah’ as its centrepiece, surrounded by single deep red ivy leaf Geraniums, variegated green leaf trailing Nepeta, blue Bacopa, Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’ and a few trixi mix in mauve dotted in between.  The basket was potted up with Coolings Professional Compost mixed with some Swellgel and some slow release, granular fertiliser ‘Osmocote’. Good job Coolings Nursery Team!

PLUS, to top it all off it is hanging above the plant of the year winner – Mulberry Bush Charlotte Russe! You can see it in all its full glory below playing centre stage to Peter Seabrook and Sophie the Countess of Wessex!

Many congratulations to the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) who put “40 Sunbury Road” together,
